Chapter Seventeen
He didnât knock.
One moment Cleo was nibbling on a piece of buttered toast and instructing herself not to think about Jake, especially not about the way they had danced together the night before, or the way his legs looked in taut breeches, or the way his eyesâ
The next moment the door to her dining room was open, and the man himself was striding in.
Cleo looked up.
âContracts to discuss,â he said briskly. Sure enough, he had a sheaf of papers tucked under his arm. But in his hand . . .
âAre those kippers?â she asked, knowing the answer, because who could mistake that smell?
âYup,â he said, sounding insufferably American. He pulled up a chair and put the kippers on the table between them. âOnce I realized that youâd never tried them, I couldnât allow that pitiful situation to continue. As a friend. Though my valet had to offer the chef a handsome bribe; I gather his French sensibilities were offended.â
Robbins was hovering beside the door. âMiss Lewis?â
âItâs all right,â she said resignedly. âMr. Addison is a business acquaintance. I suppose I shall allow him to share my breakfast. You may return to the corridor.â
âActually, Iâd be grateful if you would run down and ask the kitchen to brew my morning coffee,â Jake said. âA pot, if you would.â
âVery well,â Cleo said, nodding to Robbins.
He left, and Jake turned back to Cleo. âKippers and coffee were made by the Almighty to go together.â
Cleo wrinkled her nose. âFusty beans and oily fish.â
âAmerican drink, and British breakfast,â he said, his eyes glinting. âAs I said, made by the Almighty toââ
âNever mind that,â Cleo said hastily. âWhat are you doing here, Jake?â
âIâve decided to acquire a factory, but the process of title registration of the deed is unfamiliar to me, as itâs spelled out in the principles of property and succession. I was hoping you could help.â
Cleo brightened. She had been reading contracts since her father passed her the first one at the age of twelve. âOf course!â
âExcellent,â Jake said. He began cutting the kipper into pieces.
âI might try one bite,â Cleo told him, wrinkling her nose again. âIt smells.â
âSmoky and delicious,â Jake said.
âWhen it comes to kippers, you can find adjectives?â
âMouthwatering comes to mind.â He eyed her, and just like that, desire quivered in the air between them.
âJake,â she said warningly, putting down her fork.
He sighed. âNo kissing. No brandy.â
âExactly,â Cleo said. âThis is dangerous enough, the two of us eating breakfast without a chaperone.â
âYou donât care about your reputation, and besides, Germainâs prides itself on allowing no gossip to escape their front door. I have the feeling that adultery accounts for a good portion of their profits.â
âMy grandfather cares,â Cleo said. She gave Jake a wry smile. âItâs become increasingly clear to me that my motherâs rash behavior hurt my grandfather deeply. Likewise, my grandmother, when she was alive.â
Jake nodded. She watched as he plucked a piece of toast from the rack, cut off a square, buttered it, and piled a piece of kipper on top.
